HolyCosy: how it started.

A little bit of background…

My dream has always been to run my own business some day. As a child, this concept was around building an animal rescue, developing a complex of properties (the Sims was my go-to building software), and many other ways involving high levels of responsibility and a certain sense of purpose. I don't know why, but this is just the way I idealise my life.

In 2020, I graduated from Loughborough University with a degree in Retail, Marketing and Management. I was grateful to have found a role in a small PR agency. This was a tough period for everyone, with the pandemic leaving many of us stuck indoors working from home.

I lived in a seven person house share (whom I’d never met before), far from all my friends and family, confined to my small bedroom. My job in the agency had become very intense, working many hours of overtime and not being able to truly switch off since there was no separation of work and home.

Struggles with mental health.

The thing is, it had already been 3 years since I started having an ongoing struggle with anxiety. The mix of being overworked, confined in a small room, having financial struggles and dealing with thoughts of not being good enough resulted in a period of full on depression.

I started doing everything from my bed - work, eat, sleep, repeat.

In the end, I lost my job - both an immensely shattering and relieving moment. This gave me the opportunity to think about what I really wanted from my life, and how I would be able to get myself out of this situation.

Ready for change.

I remember so clearly the moment that I decided to turn my life around. When I decided that I would take full responsibility for building my future, on something that could potentially make people in similar situations to me feel better.

I was in my bed all the time, right? So of course I thought a lot about my comfort there, how the softness and colours of the bedding occasionally lifted up my mood, even for just a moment of appreciation. I also thought about how much bedding plays a role in the bedroom decor, particularly since that was my only personal space that I could add my style to.

I was already shopping around for cosy bedding months before, and noticed that there wasn't quite what I was looking for. I found that for quality material, there wasn't much but plain colours, and that for patterned bedding the quality was often missing. The only options that had both high quality fabric and beautiful designs were overly priced (over £300 for a full set).

And that’s when I had my lightbulb moment. I decided to follow my dream of building my own business - in a sector where I could help others with quality, comfort and style for the cosiest of beds.

The first steps.

Once this was decided, I did a bunch of consumer research on what people want for their bedding, and went on a quest to find the most experienced textiles manufacturers that would also allow me to give HolyCosy's product range a reasonable price.

And the name? Well, simply put, I personally praise all things soft and cosy, and believe these are so important in feeling 100% comfortable at home.
